ASP 3-Star Gran Canaria Santa Pro Junior is Back ON at La Cicer.
La Cicer, Gran Canaria (Friday, May 18, 2012) – This morning an increased swell and lighter winds allowed for the ASP 3-Star Gran Canaria Santa Pro Junior to start again with the first heat of Round 2 at 8am. After suffering a lay-day yesterday, surfers and event officials were pleased with the conditions on offer this morning and decided for an early start in order to try and run the 24 heats of Rounds 2 & 3 of the competition.
Rob Gunning, ASP Europe’s Tour Manager, was on-site early this morning with ASP Head Judge Mikel Zalakain and Event Co-Organizer Miguel Tavio to assess the conditions and discuss the overall plan for the third day of competition here in Gran Canaria.
“We’ve got some very good conditions today after the day off yesterday, I think that was the right decision, and we’re looking at completing two full rounds today”, Rob said. “The tide is coming in which will improve the conditions during the morning, so by the time we get into Round 3 which is sort of the business end of the day, tide should be right in the perfect spot and we should see some excellent high performance surfing from Europe’s top Pro Juniors.”
After the completion of round one on Wednesday, competition heats up today at La Cicer with all the major players in the 2012 European Title hunt coming into play. Last year’s runner-up William Aliotti (FRA) will start his 2012 campaign in Heat 1, closely followed by the other 2011 Top 5 finishers including Portuguese stars Vasco Ribeiro and Frederico Morais.
“The top seeds hit the water today, and there’s a lot of pressure on all the surfers because this event is so important for the final rankings with the 3-Star rating, it’s going to play a major role in our final rankings for the year.”
The 2012 Gran Canaria Santa Pro Junior will run from May 16-20 at La Cicer, Gran Canaria / Canary Islands. For more information, and all results, photos, video highlights, and press releases log-on to www.grancanaria.aspeurope.com
