ISLAND STYLE PRO JUNIOR - ASP 1* JUNIOR
July 22 to 24 - Prizemoney 5 000 $- Tapia de Casariego , Asturias – Spain

Sunday, July 24 th

We woke up with the wind and clouds over the little bay of Tapia today, to start the last rounds of this Pro Junior event at 10.30 am at the main site. With 2- 3 ft waves breaking thanks to the wind pushing the swell towards the bay, the surfers are enjoying some long rides connecting from the outside to the inside. With the tide going down all the round of 32 was held in pretty good conditions, giving the riders the opportunity to show their skills; from radical snapbacks to vertical aerials, the courgaeous crowd enjoyed some classic carves as well as new-school manoeuvers under a cloudy and sometimes rainy sky.

With a great feeling around the competition aera, we once again experienced a really pleasant atmosphere eventhough the pressure started to rise as the first quarter was sent at 1.15 pm, with the tide starting to rise again.

Once again Michel Bourez (Pyf) rocked the beachbreak adding so much power to his few perfect vertical turns that he took off on two of his waves to get a 7+ and an 8+. But unfortunately he was stopped in the semifinals for the second year in a row, by inform Amado Pro Junior finalist Romain Laulhé (Fra). Young rider Marc Lacomare (Fra) managed as well to grab a ticket for the final, but once again the show of these semifinals came from best scorer of the contest Joan Duru (Fra) who left his opponents needing a combination of waves to catch up with him.

With less wind and the sun trying its best to shine on this Island Style Tapia Pro Junior 2005, the 30 minute decider was sent in after a short ten minute break in order to get the best conditions as possible. The last four french surfers of the contest entered the action scene at 3.40 pm in good conditions, with 2 to 3 ft left and righthanders breaking regularly all the way to the shore. With a perfect timing, the surfers got the last waves of the day as the high tide slowly broke the small swell that had pleased us for the day. As there was less and less waves, the positionning and choices became crucial to take the lead, and 15 year old Marc Lacomare found the right ones after waiting for ten minutes. Actually ranked 5 th on the european junior rankings, Romain Cloître (Reu) then took the lead as 20 minutes were remaining and secured his lead with a 6.5 pts wave, backing up a 3.5 pointer. The battle took place as 5 minutes were remaining; Joan Duru (Fra) eventually ripped once again and found the points he needed to get from 4 th to 1 st as 30 seconds were remaining, and grab his first pro junior title of the season. Congratulations to all surfers, see you next year.

We've had a very good event here in Tapia thanks to the Picante Surf Club and Island Style, main sponsors and organisers of the Island Style Tapia 1 Star “Pro Junior” Event. Thanks for reading, check our coverage on the web.
