The expected swell finally reaches the beach of San Juan

After having spent two days waiting for an expected north west swell, the organizers of this 4* WQS event decided to launch the first heats of the contest at 1 pm - local time. Perfect timing in fact, as the surfers had the chance to train the whole morning on the famous spots of El Quemao and La Santa before the swell reached the pointbreak of San Juan. 3-4 feet waves and a light onshore wind offered good quality surf for the riders entering the contest.

The first heats of the afternoon were the opportunity for the local riders to qualify for the main event and to show their experience on this tricky lefthander; David Acevedo, Jaime Jones, Jorge Lopez and Mikel Lemes got their ticket for the round of 96.

Later on, the best European and some International surfers entered the contest for the first 8 heats of the round of 96 and showed some incredible performances. Spanish superstar Aritz Aramburu, scored the 3rd best heat of the day with a total of 13.50 and will face famous Basque Acero brothers and top south African surfer Paul Canning in the round of 64. He comments “We’ve all been waiting for the waves; almost 10 days without competing! I’m definitely focused on a big result”.

Famous local ripper Jose Maria Cabrera got trough his heat as well making second behind hot French rookie Jeremy Flores. Powerfull carves and perfect knowledge of this long lefthander made the whole job for Jose Maria.

The best performance of the day is to be given to Anthony Walsh - from Australia – who scored the best heat of the day with a total of 14.93 points.

Better and bigger waves conditions are expected for tomorrow and organizers are willing to complete the whole round of 96 and 64 in a row. The check-in has been called for tomorrow, 9 am.
