Day 1, September 8, 2005 - Ferrolterra Pantin Classic starts with excellent surfing
Yes indeed, The Pantín Classic has reached its age of consent. It`s been eighteen years since our first edition. But we aren´t going to celebrate as some may expect, in a retrospective introvert way. We´re going to celebrate just as kids do on reaching this age. Do they, by any chance, look back at this time? They don´t, do they? So we aren´t going to either. Just as the eighteen year olds have their whole lives in front of them. then so do we. The waves we´ve had, and that we´ve surfed so happily, will continue. Let´s concentrate on the waves that are going to come, the swells that will head for the marvellous Galician beaches in forthcoming Septembers.
This year with the usual dose of huge effort - things don´t change much! - we´ve managed another star, both for the men´s competition and the women´s. To manage this, support from Caixanova and especially from "Galicia Navega 2005" , has proved essential. The total prize money of 60,000 dollars and the fact of being right in the middle of the European leg of the WQS circuit will make for a star-studded starting list and an unforgettable spectacle. There´s just one small thing (small?) we don´t feel satisfied about. The women´s event still has one star less than the men´s event. So the Océano Surf Club promises that next year the number of stars will be the same for both categories.
The Surf Film Festival, after last year´s success, will again take place. Once again our aim is to better the normal video clips. As a back up to this we´re going to show a few "home-made" films of previous editions of the Pantín Classic. Bit by bit we´re trying to incorporate our relatively "young" history, that of surfing in Galicia , into the "ancient" surfing cultures of other places on this planet.
Talking about the planet ,and more precisely about preservation, here we´re going to allow ourselves a retrospective glance at Pantín beach in that far away period of 1988, comparing what it was like then to what it is like now. To be frank, no comparison is possible. Albeit with the best of intentions, the environment has come off worse. The beach was cleaner (and there weren´t any rubbish bins!), the hill had not been mutilated by the car park which in turn has stifled the beach, the new path (maintenance of which is non existent) has not taken the place of the old one. Now the sewage from the life-savers´ hut effects twice the area, and from time to time produces smells that would have been unimaginable in 1988. To cap it all, recent land speculation right on the beach (wasn´t 150 metres the legal limit?) may destroy everything. The Océano Surf Club feels that a balance between development and environmental preservation is possible and that many of the problems we´ve mentioned above can and must be solved, or at least, minimalized. Surely Pantín, the incredible "wave factory" is worthy of this?
To finish off, we´d like to publicly express our thanks to all those surfers - men and women - who have come to Pantín to compete, to enjoy our waves and to spread all over the world an image of modern Galicia. Thanks also to all our sponsors, institutions and companies (both big and small) that have accompanied us over the years. Thanks also go to all the volunteers who, year after year, work for nothing in return. Without everyone´s help we wouldn´t have made it - a heartfelt thanks to everyone!
As far as we´re concerned, all that´s left for us is to offer everyone who comes to Pantín the chance to experience feelings of freedom, beauty and friendship - the essence of surfing. We can offer them the chance to think, for four days and as we said in the 1995 editorial, that an ideal world is possible, full of fresh clean air, blue sea, sun, good music, smiling faces and a happy end... |
